Many players think that having access to all five resources is the way to go. But if you have suboptimal resource probabilities, it’s not going to work for you. What you should focus on is having number variety, not resource variety. By number variety, what I mean is having production on the widest variety of possible die rolls. Of course, focus on the highest probability numbers first.

In my starting placement, the dream scenario is to have production on a 6, 8, 9, and 5. It doesn’t matter what the resources are. It’s rare to have the ability to find placement that provides that, so I normally settle for 3 out of 4 of the previously mentioned highest producing numbers. Having a variety of the top numbers almost guarantees consistent resource production, regardless if the dice trend goes one way or the other. It doesn’t matter if all of those hexes are sheep, I’d rather have quantity over quality. The excess resources can always be traded and converted into the thing you want somehow. There’s no such thing as a worthless resource.

The second priority after number variety is to optimize my production through ports. I look for positions with two high producing hexes of the same resource near its matching port. Do not start on the port or else the lack of resource production early in the game will wreak havoc. Instead, make it a priority to build to the port later.Having a port helps make you self-sufficient. Being self-sufficient is a greater degree better than having to trade to get what you require. Other players will only trade if the deal helps them in some way, making trades win-win. I’d much rather have me win instead of being in a win-win, so I look to the ports to help become self-sufficient. After you have obtained diversity in production numbers, then it’s time to take a look at what resources you might have in your possession. There are two main strategies that flow depending on what resources you are strong in:

Settlements and roads: If you’re strong in wood and brick, this will make settlement production easy and road production natural. Having the longest road will be a key part of your winning strategy.

Cities and development cards: If you’re stronger in ore and grain, this is the way to go. All things being equal, if your choice is between focusing on a new settlement or upgrading a city, then upgrade into a city. Usually, spots where you already have a settlement are superior to spots with no settlements; else you would have not placed your settlements there. It is more beneficial to ramp up on good production than to expand into mediocre production. Ultimately, be flexible and go where the resources lead you. Set a goal in each turn to build something. Each turn try and get something on the board. Even if it is only a road, it’s at least something. It’s better to get a good thing on the board now than the best thing on the board on a later turn.

When trading, whether you are trying to get a city or a settlement, do whatever is required to get what you want during your turn, even if it is an unfavorable trade for you. It is more beneficial to have an expensive settlement now than a cheap settlement later. If you miss the chance to build on a ten, then nothing but tens will be rolled and you’ll have missed your opportunity.

Sebelumnya sory temen2 dengan url ini karena terlalu lama untuk silent dan gak ada berita sama sekali, maklum bagian postingannya masih ngurus yang lain, tapi sekarnag saya mencoba nulis apa yang selama ini menjadi kegiatan ku..sesuai dengan judul postingan ini, masalah proses pencairan check adsense kemarin pas enak2 duduk di areal airport ngurah rai tiba2 ada telp dari rumah, kalo gak salah bilang gini : " kak ada kiriman dari sweaden" ha... prasaan kaget bukan main.. saking penasarannya aku langsung pulang meninggalkan kumpul2 ma temen2 waktu itu,, akhirnya dengan penasaran aku buka kiriman berupa kayak postcard tersebut.. ternyata lembaran check dari google. Dengan perasaan senang dikit, aku langsung online dan browsing kesana kemari untuk gi mana caranya mencairkan check tersebut, akhirnya menemukan salah satu url yang ngebahas itu.

Due to its early recognition of the Dutch, Bangli was spared during the conquest of South Bali in the early 1900s. The steady ascent through Bangli passes through tidy villages and roads lined with groves of bamboo and coffee. In Bangli town the ancient Kehen temple is under a huge banyan tree. Celebrations feature ritual baris warrior dances with different weapons, and towering offering fill the courtyards every 3 years.

Nearby is the Sasana Budaya Art Center with occasional art exhibitions and performances. The view beyond the town from Bukit Demulih is breathaking. An interesting village is Penglipuran, with its neatly rerraced street. Higher up on Mount Batur at Penelokan are spectacular views of the active volcanic cone and peaceful lake below. In the village of Kintamani is Pura Batur a huge complex of temples for the lake goddess, perched on the crater rim. Beyond the village in Penulisan is Tegeh Koripan, and ancient and mysterious temple often hidden by mists and reached by a long flight of steps. A winding road leads down into the crater to the soothing Toya Bungkah hotsprings at the edge of lake Batur. Hiking up the volcano is possible. The Gianyar regency was home to Bali’s oldest kingdoms, the Buddhist Warmadewa dynasty in Bedulu – Pajeng that ruled until the 14th century, and another center in Batuan. The area faded in history until the 18th century when the Klungkung family founded Sukawati, a short-lived dysnasty that fell with the rising Gianyar kingdom. Rivals from Sukawati set up courts in Ketewel, Singapadu, Negara, Peliatan, Ubud, and Tegalalang which led to decades of warfare. A powerful Gelgel family in Blahbatuh rose during the 19th century. Dutch assistance Balinese courts in the early 1900s. Gianyar has everything from stone carving and daily Barong-Rangda trance dances in Batubulan, jewelry in Celuk, and a huge art market in Sukawati for the best range of souvenirs including locally made fans and puppets.

Batuan produces fine paintings and masks ; its temple festivals feature rare dances. Mas, kemenuh, Tengkulak and Pujung are woocarving villages, and the Ubud – Peliatan tourist resort area is famous for paintings and galleries. Gianyar town produces colorful woven cloth. Blahbatuh has a faoundry where musical instruments are made. Performances of trance and monkey-chant dance are held in nearby Bona, home to plamleaf crafts and mabmboo furniture. The Bedulu-pejeng area has Bali’s oldest temples, including the Goa Gajah elepahant cave, carved reliefs at yeh Pulu, the huge Samuan tiga comples, fantastic statues at kebo Edan and Pusering Jagat, and the famous bronze moon – gong at Panataran Sasih. The carved temples of Gunung Kawi and the sacred spring of Tirtha Empul are in Tampaksiring, home to bone and coconut-shell carving. Natural beauty abounds with a huge waterfall at Tegenungan and spectacular terraced ricefields at Tegalalang. The Ayung river ofters ratting, and thousands of herons return every sunset at Petulu.

Tabanan has its roots in the 14th century when Jananese invaders settled in the area. As they expanded their teritory, they came into conflict with the Mengwi house, founded during the mid 1600s with the fall of Gelgel and allied with Buleleng. In the 18th century Mengwi was the 2nd most powerful royal house after Klungkung, whose support it enjoyed. Internal conflict in he late 1700s weakened Mengwi and led to territorial losses to Tabanan which were retaken in the mid 1800s. By the late 1800s further conflict erupted and Klungkung with drew its support,

opening the way for its destruction by Klungkung, Badung, Tabanan, Bangli and the Dutch. Tabanan got most of Mengwi, but rising Dutch interests in Bali and the refusal of Tabanan to give in led to its end in 1906 with the imprisonment and suicide of the ruler and his son. Krambitan village has 2 places, puppet - style paintings, and the exciting tektekan exorcist dance drama with music from struck bamboo and giant wooden cowbell. Tista boasts the special leko-andir dance done by young girls. Penarukan has good carving, and ceramics are made in Pejaten. Upland Blayu is famous for its woven brocades. Extending from the mountains to the sea, Tabanan has a wide variety of natural beauty. The Bratan Lake area has a huge botanical garden at Bedugul with produce farms at Candi Kuning. The Ulun Danu Temple to the lake goodess sits at the water's edge, for the lake irrigates Tabanan's ricefileds. On Mount Batukau is Pura Luhur, the royal ancestral temple. Below this is Jatiluwih with spectacular views of bali, the yeh Panas hotspirngs at Penatahan, and the beautiful Alas Kedaton Temple. Most of Jembrana includes the forests, mountains, and coasts of the West Bali National park and Reserve. Visitors must obtain the necessary permit and guide at the park headquarters in Cekik. You might be lucky to see the rare white Bali starling bird, or maybe hear the roar of the Balinese tiger, long thought to be extinct. Excellent diving and snorkling can be found around Pulau Menjangan island, with the Banyu Wedang hotsprings nearby on the coast. Catch a ferry to Java at Gilimanuk port. Close to the district capital of Negara is the temple of Gede Prancak near a river, while further east the Rambut Siwi complex has magnificent ocean views. A large fishing community has been established at Pengambengan, and there is an excellent surfing beach at Medewi. Cloves are grown on plantations in the foothills around Asah Duren. Bigger is better in Jembrana: huge bamboo xylophones ofthe gamelan jegog accompanies martial arts and dances. Kendang mebarung competitions of large oversized drums are sometimes held. This tour take 4 hours. We go first to Mengwi to visit Pura Taman Ayun, a temple from 17 century. This is a royal family temple. This temple is big. There are three parts. First part there is a wantilan, a building for cock fighting and profane dance. Cock fighting is important for Balinese Hindu because it is a sacrifice for bad spirits. The cock, at least one, will be killed. Sometimes both die because of knives used. The blood of the cocks are sacrifice for evil spirits. The second part is a bit higher than the first. It is for musician playing music to accompany the ceremony. The last part or the third part is the holliest part the most sacred one. There are shrines, temples or merus with black roof . this part is specially for praying to God and oehter spirits and ancestors.

The ceremony takes places twice a year. Every six month the family of the king celebrate with local peoples of the village. Then we continue to monkey forest. There are many monkey, small gray monkey named macaca. They are not bad, not aggressive. There are also bats, big one on the top of the tree. There are more and more monkeys

Tanah lot is only 30 minutes from the forest. We go south from the forest and it is a temple of district Tabanan. The temple itself dates back to16 century. It is a small temple on the sea. When high tide, Hindu people will be wet if they cross to the temple. This temple is for fishermen, farmers to pray for good harvest and have a lot of fishes when they go to the see….the sunset at this location is also very beautiful and unforgettable.
For that reason the tourist from many countries come and visit Bali…. Peoples of Tanah lot also pay respect to a high priest, Hindu priest who came to the location and visited villages near by and made good things to people. Now people also respect the priest. After the sunset we go back home, to hotel in Sanur. We go east from Tanah lot and we will pass the town Denpasar the capital of Bali and not far from Denpasar we will arrive at Sanur again

Barong dance and volcano tour. We start from sanur village and take the road to batubulan village. We need around 30 minutes from the hotel. We go north passing the high way so that make it quicker to arrive at the village. Barong and rangda dance is very famous dance for visitors, foreigners or local visitors from Indonesia like Jawa, Sumatra and other island in Indonesia. Barong is a lion but mythical and is a symbol of good spirit and also protector of peoples and villages in bali.

While rangda is a widow who is practicing black magic is symbol or evil or bads spirits. Boths of them is a symbol of eternal fight or struggle of good and evil on the world. But there is no winner in the end. Because on the world always exist good and bad. In this dance wewill see also kris dance. Kris dance is peoples with sword or Kris on the hand try to kill evil but they can not kill the bad spirits in figure of rangda because rangda is too strong for them.

The magic power of rangda refuse them and make them in bad condition, they are confusing and stab their body instead of killing the rangda. This dance take an hour. It is very nice and interesting because we will know Balinese culture and life. After the dance we continue our tour to visit villages of arts like jewellery at celuk village that specially make many things from silver and gold. There are many galleries of silver and gold. Nearly all families work in silver and gold. After celuk there is a Balinese house compound to visit to know the situation inside Balinese family.

There is a family temple that is located at northeast direction of the compound because the direction is sacred. Near the temple there is an open pavilion, building for the dead people before being cremated or buried. The family put the body there and also give offerings like food, coffee or tea for the soul of the dead. There is a building for parent and baby and teenagers for sleeping. Also there is a kitchen and granary that are located at southwest direction, the impure direction, not sacred one. The pigs or cows and chicken are on the southwest position. So the Balinese house consists of several buildings. We call it traditional house.

We leave celuk village and continue our tour passing the village of sukawati the famous art market village. In the market of sukawati we can find many things. Most of all, artwork like woodcarving, paintings, clothes and soon. The next village is mas, the village of woodcarver. There are ebeny, sandal, hibiscus, teak, mahogany, crocodile wood and soon. In bali the village of, mas is the center of wood carving in Bali. What about ubud. Ubud is famous for paintings. There are young artist style, traditional or abstract style in good quality. There a market and palace in the center of ubud. The town is very beautiful, nice.

It is green and the buildings are very nicely decorated with Balinese artworks. We pass ubud and we take the road to Tampaksiring. The village is not far from the mountain. So it is not so hot but cool. In the village of Tampaksiring we visit a holyspring temple called pura tirta empul that dates back to eleven century. There is a pool where hindu people can take bath after praying. It means that taking a bath in the pool here is only on a special occasion. For example, after having a bad dream at night or may be after get sick people with the offering they go there for wash their head and body,for purification. Certin peoples also go there for baptizing their new cars. It is a beautiful temple. Then we go to the mountain and we will see a very nice view of volcano and lake batur in kintamani village.

This volcano is still actif but in a small activity. last eruption was 1994. we can see black lava and the lake is nice. We stand on a hill that 1300 m high over sea level. The people around the mountain live of farming plantiong vegetables, onions, cabbages and fishing on the lake Batur. There are a lot of karpers and other kind of fish. We can have lunch at the restaurant located in a very nice place to see the view of the volcano and lake. Some visitors climb to the peak of volcano to see the sun rise. They start climbing at 4 and arrive at 6 at the top. It is every amazing view when the sun rise…

After lunch we can go to hotel through the country side and small road passing the rice field to see peoples working on their paddy field…

Students perform in European concert tour

Local student musicians from Wayland, Weston, Sudbury and Westford joined with others from Wisconsin and Virginia for the Liberty Tour 2007. Organized by the American Music Abroad group, the students returned last week from a two-week, seven-concert tour of Europe.

Over 130 students made the trip, along with their chaperones and directors, including 48 Weston residents, and 12 Waylanders. The trip, led by Weston High School teacher Christopher Memoli, traveled through France, Brussels, Luxembourg, Germany and Austria. Preparations for the tour were extensive.

"Mr. Memoli told us about it at the beginning of the year, and we had to make an audition tape," explained Jaime Jimenez, a Weston High School sophomore. "Once school ended we took a bus down to Lafayette College, where we had what Mr. Memoli called ‘Band Boot Camp’ to prepare."

After two days of "Boot Camp," the tour took off for Europe on June 25. Once in Europe, the group moved quickly, never spending more than three nights in one place.
The goals of the tour were quite simple, according to Jimenez.

"It was all about going into Europe and giving the people in the towns we visited a sense of American music. We played famous marches and pieces they would recognize. At the same time, it gave us a sense of European culture."

The tour made stops in many towns amidst its travels.

"Brugge was probably my favorite," said cellist Jeff Stix, a Weston High School senior. "It was a smaller and more quaint town. You were able to experience the life and the atmosphere more. The cathedral there was amazing and the people were great."

"I’ve actually visited some of the countries we went to before," continued Stix, "It’s a completely different experience, though, going without your parents. There are so many things we did as a group … We had a snowball fight and went tubing on top of a glacier in Germany."

Of the trip’s seven concerts, the last was the resounding favorite.

"We really improved each time, so the last one was great," said Stix. "It was a really happy time because we were really celebrating what we had been working on together for weeks. It was a very celebratory mood."

A lot of work went into the trip, and at times it was quite difficult, according to Magdalena Buczek, a violinist going into her junior year at Wayland High School.

"The outdoor concerts were quite an experience," Buczek said. "I’ve never played a concert outside before, and the wind was blowing and sheet music was flying everywhere, and every time you wanted to turn the page you had to undo the clips and everything."

The trip was well worth the work, and Buczek enjoyed it thoroughly.

"My favorite place was Salzburg," she said, "we saw the birthplace of Mozart, and we did a lot of shopping … We went up into the castle and toured the whole place, so that was cool."

But the trip was about more than just fun and music in Europe. It was a learning and growing experience for the students.

"I went on the previous trip two years ago," said Emily Gazda, a Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School senior. "This time … toward the end I started to want to go home, but I was a lot more independent than I have been in the past … This time I took control of my own money, and my own things, living more independently. I think it should be a sort of college preparatory experience."

"We know this trip somehow affected us but we don’t know quite how yet," Buczek explained. "We might know how in a couple days or a couple months. There are small things now – we did laundry by ourselves, we were responsible for our passports – becoming more responsible. But for the big picture, I think we’ll find out in the future how it changed us. But not just yet."

Hard Red Spring Wheat Promoted at the South Asian Buyers Conference

Bali, Indonesia--Hard red spring (HRS) has bright future in South Asian region says North Dakota Wheat Commission (NDWC) Administrator Neal Fisher.
Fisher presented the HRS outlook at the conference.

The quality attributes of hard red spring wheat were showcased to more than 200 milling and wheat food processing executives, procurement managers, quality control specialists and technicians at the U.S. Wheat Associates South Asian Buyers Conference last week in Bali, Indonesia.

The sixth biennial conference gave buyers in the region an early look at the new U.S. crop, educates about the value and functional benefits of U.S. wheat and fosters stronger relationships with the U.S. industry.

"We've seen some very good gains for hard red spring wheat sales in all the countries represented in the South Asian region in recent years because of efforts like this," says Fisher.

Fisher has been a regular participant at the conference and again presented the supply and demand situation for hard red spring wheat and the outlook for the 2007 crop season.

"Combined purchases from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore recently completed 2006-07 marketing variety equaling nearly as much as our largest customer Japan, hitting 55 million bushels," Fisher says.

"The future is bright with growing interest in U.S. hard red spring as an improver wheat in the region," he says.
Hard red spring wheat is used extensively in South Asia for both bread and noodle products.

The South Asian market purchased roughly 22 percent of the total U.S. hard red spring wheat exports in the 2006-07 marketing year.
Rising quality standards and competition, combined with industry consolidation, have increased buyer demands for technical, quality and market information.

Freight Prices Don't Deter Buyers
Fisher says there was great interest in the upcoming HRS crop, despite the high export and freight prices facing buyers this year.

"Concerns about price seemed to be overshadowed by their demand for U.S. quality HRS," Fisher says.

"Most buyers seemed willing to assume the higher costs to get the functionality and performance they know they are getting from U.S. wheat, especially the hard red spring wheat that is their primary import class."

Fisher believes buyers are more concerned about the record ocean freight rates of $65-$75 per ton, double the rates of a few years ago.
The first two days of the conference, July 11-12, focused on technical milling and baking topics relevant to all six U.S. wheat classes, and information supporting wheat procurement was the focus of July 13-14.

FEATURE - Tourists flock to Bali despite new travel warnings

JIMBARAN, Indonesia (Reuters) -- Bali, the lush Indonesian island famous for its sun-kissed beaches, is drawing tourists in droves, and travel warnings that Islamic militants might strike again has done little to dampen the spirit.

Almost five years after 202 people were killed in the bombing of a Bali nightclub, tourists are back enjoying the island's nightlife and soaking up the sun on Bali's palm-fringed beaches.

"That was a sad event but Bali is too beautiful to resist. The place is bouncing back," said 23-year-old Australian Josh Donnelly as he walked past the now razed Sari Club, which was blown up in the 2002 bombing.

After the attack, Bali suffered a dramatic slump in tourism and locals such as taxi driver Gede Widiada found they could barely make ends meet.

"I have been selling my wife's jewellery in the past four years to run my family. But my income now is much better," said the taxi driver as he waited for tourists outside a resort.

Like Widiada, many shops, restaurants, and hotels on this island are finally seeing their fortunes revived.

Dubbed the "Island of Gods" for its myriad Hindu temples and religious rituals, Bali suffered another blow in 2005 when suicide bombers blew themselves up at three restaurants, killing 20 people.

The attacks in 2002 and 2005, aimed at Western targets, killed a total of 92 Australians.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued an upgraded travel advisory on July 8, warning Australians that terrorists were actively planning attacks, including on Bali.

But despite these warnings, Australians who make up more than 15 percent of the total foreign tourist arrivals in Bali, are flocking to one of their favourite destinations.

"I am not afraid of coming back to Bali. You could die in a road accident tomorrow," said Donnelly.
Indonesian police say the security situation in the country at the moment is favourable.
Tourism in Bali, a predominantly Hindu region in Muslim Indonesia, provides a livelihood for 70 percent of the three million people living on this island of surfing beaches.

Shops selling batik clothing, carvings and silverware near the famous Kuta beach reported increased sales since this year, although they have still not reach pre-2002 levels.

"We have probably reached just 60 or 70 percent of that level. Two years ago, it was just 30-40 percent," said Tina, an assistant at a shop selling paintings to tourists.

BALI RECOVERY
Bagus Sudibya, an advisor at the Bali Tourism Board, said the industry and the government had jointly spent nearly $10 million since last year to revive tourism to the island.

The island saw a 34 percent jump in foreign tourist arrivals in the first five months of 2007 compared to the same period last year. Tourism figures show the average hotel occupancy in Bali so far in July was between 70 and 90 percent, compared with 50-70 percent in July 2006.

"It's the holiday season now and it's nice to see there that our rooms are fully occupied," said Made Kardana, resort assistant manager at Intercontinental Bali Resort.

While Jakarta has been aggressively promoting the island by holding major governmental meetings, hotels have been providing attractive packages to private business conference organisers.
"Business delegates are visiting the region and seeing it for themselves," Sudibya said.
Bali will also host the high profile Kyoto Protocol meeting in December, which will give a boost to arrivals this year.

Last month Indonesian police arrested two alleged top Jemaah Islamiyah leaders. Among them was Abu Dujana, who admitted to heading a military wing of the network and is suspected by police of being involved in the first Bali bomb among other attacks.

"There is stepped-up security everywhere in Bali and the arrest of militants will also add to the region's confidence," Sudibya added.
Guards still frisk customers at doors of pubs and cars at the gates of hotels and resorts, but the mood is upbeat.

"The spirit of Bali never dies," said a discotheque manager Putu Budiasa as tourists bopped to hip-hop music.

Sales and Marketing in Travel Asia Pacific 2007 Special

The recent past has proved to be quite an eventful period for Asia Pacific travel search engine Bezurk.com.
If on one hand, Bezurk.com launched a new Flight Search product that searches multiple airline and travel agencies, on the other the company also signed a spate of deals including ones with Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts, Carlson Hotels, New Zealand’s independent news publication Scoop.co.nz and Qatar Airways.

Bezurk’s distribution network has enjoyed considerable growth in the past six months, according to its Founder and Chief Marketing Officer Craig Hewett. He attributed such progress to its distribution partners Yahoo South East Asia, Lonely Planet, Changi Airport and News Limited in Australia and growing affiliate partners.
“We are in a fortunate position as we have extended our footprint across South East Asia and Australia thus exposing our search engine to a varied and growing online travel market. Our flights engine is proving very popular, especially since we launched our new display matrix – which allows consumers to quickly compare across airlines and across booking websites,” said Hewett.

Hewett also spoke about target audience, how hotel deliverables have contributed towards flights engine, plans ahead etc. Excerpts from an interview with EyeforTravel.com’s Ritesh Gupta.

Early last year, you acknowledged that the team had under-estimated the complexity of building a comprehensive hotel search engine. How do you assess the progress made by Bezurk.com in the last year or so?

Building a really poor hotel search engine is easy, but to build an engine which extracts all the hotel data and pricing for the same hotel as its referenced across multiple booking websites, is extremely difficult.
The biggest challenge which we faced was matching the same hotel across multiple websites, as there is no universal hotel identifier across hotel booking websites for the same hotel e.g. Every hotel website which we search has their own property/hotel id for lets say “Holiday Inn Singapore”. Add to this the fact that some of these sites are selling different room types with booking restrictions and some on a request basis.
One of the key consumer benefits which we deliver is that if a consumer is interested in comparing the Holiday Inn Singapore across different websites they can easily compare price, booking conditions, room type and instant confirmation across multiple websites who sell the hotel.

Could you share info on hotel search engine and how hotel deliverables have contributed towards flights engine?

These two products are vastly different with varying sophistication across suppliers – the only similarity is the way in which we have approached both product categories – which is ensuring that we deliver rich data – designed to empower a user’s purchase decision.

How would you describe your target audience?

Its common knowledge that one size does not fit all across Asia. We are mindful of the booking nuances of our target markets both in terms of consumers as well as the online travel companies who operate in these markets. Our Bezurk platform is highly configurable and scalable for the Asia Pacific region, so that we can effectively tailor Bezurk for different audience.
During our event last year, a search engine senior executive, speaking about Asia said language issues are not the predominate factor. Rather local economies, their maturation and intricacies really determine market entry.

How has the comfort level with online booking and payment increased in this region from travel meta-search engine perspective?

Travel meta search is about delivering travel content which assists a consumer during their research period thus helping them make a purchase decision. We know that a portion of Bezurk users who reside in less developed online markets will compare travel options using our search and sort filters and then complete their reservation with the travel supplier offline which overcomes any issues with online payment concerns.

If all travel meta search engines harp about keeping their home pages clear and simple, then what differentiates the experience? Is it depth of the search or speed? Basically, how do you think consumers are going to strengthen a bond with a particular meta-search engine?

Going back to my earlier comment about how easy it is to build a really poor meta search experience there are some considerable barriers to building one which strengthens a bond with consumers.
I agree with you that the depth of the search needs to be extensive and delivered quickly and intuitively. In 2008, you will see considerable innovation in UI designs using AJAX which will allow users to quickly compare extensive travel data in a simple and rewarding manner.

You had also referred to planned customer centric innovations which will be designed to create loyalty through usefulness. Could you elaborate on this?

Our recent matrix UI design for flights is a perfect example where Bezurk is creating loyalty through usefulness by displaying disparate fare data in format which is easier for users to quickly and intuitively compare best fare options across multiple websites.

Travel meta-search engines in the US have been acquiring social networking sites. How do you view this trend?

Meta search is all about delivering convenience and rich user experience to users and social generated content if integrated correctly can add to this experience. So in principle is a smart idea.

Talking from trade perspective, how are suppliers benefiting from you whether its suppliers are shown in a real time environment and benefiting from a smooth integration into their own web site all the way to the point of purchase or getting access to your statistics etc?

A lot has to do with the tools and functionality which qualifies a customer before a supplier incurs a cost. We provide a great deal of valuable product information on Bezurk for both hotels and flights which can easily be sorted and filtered using our Rich UI – so that a user is presented with only relevant choice before they click into partner website
Bezurk has made considerable inroads with key portal distribution partners across the South East Asia and Australia regions so we now offer exposure to highly targeted customers using, News Limited Lonely Planet and Yahoo SE. Our Distribution economics are a lot more efficient than should our suppliers try and deal direct with these portals.

AAA Travel Agents Expect Robust Summer Travel Season

Travelers Want to Visit Unusual Places, Cruise Outside the Caribbean
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sixty seven percent of AAA travel agency managers expect that total summer bookings will increase compared to last summer. In addition, 70 percent of AAA travel agency managers anticipate increased international bookings compared to last year, which they attribute to consumers’ increased comfort in traveling to Europe.

Cruising is a popular way for travelers to relax and get away from it all, and this year travelers will expand their cruising repertoire by trying something new. Over half of AAA travel agency managers expect that Alaskan and European cruise bookings will increase compared to last year due to attractive pricing and the cache of cruising away from the Caribbean. Because travelers are looking to cruise new destinations, Caribbean cruise bookings are expected to decrease compared to last year, according to half of AAA travel agency managers.

Mining officials are going to be bringing the lessons they learned in North Bay to exploration drilling sites around the world.

Atlas Copco in North Bay has been hosting 15 international delegates from as far away as Kenya, Mongolia, Egypt, China and Sweden this week, during a product training session, "to train the trainers," said Peter Balen, Atlas Copco's local product manager for drilling tools.

"We're here to learn and become the experts when we go back home," said Evans Mabeya of Kenya, an Atlas Copco employee who represents the company in 13 African countries.

Balen said the city was a logical place to host the weeklong hands-on training session because of the importance of the wealth of knowledge here.

"What we're trying to do is enlighten them (the 15 international delegates) on the whole process of mineral exploration," Balen said, noting the delegates are mainly salespeople for the Sweden-based company but also serve as technical consultants for the products they sell.

"Historically, North Bay was the logistical centre for Canada's mining industry . . . But with time, we've developed an incredible pool of intellect and resources that have positioned North Bay as the centre of the exploration industry for the globe."

But it wasn't all work. The delegates got to have some fun, including a cruise on the Chief Commanda II.

"It's been brilliant, really. We couldn't have asked for better weather. The whole week's been structured really well," said Colin Farenden, an Atlas Copco employee from London, England. "And it's great because everything here (in North Bay) seems to revolve around the mining industry. Everyone seems to be involved in one way or another."

Mayor Vic Fedeli said the mining industry is important to the city, noting there are 39 companies in the mining business operating out of North Bay. And it's great, he added, to be able to show off North Bay as a mining centre and as a "beautiful city" to international travellers.

And with the mining industry booming, said Balen, North Bay's position as a mining centre of excellence could grow. In fact, in April, Atlas Copco announced plans to build a new 7,000-square-metre manufacturing plant in the city that will result in seven new workers being hired.

Over the next 10 years, the mining industry in Canada alone will have to hire 81,000 new workers to replace those retiring and to meet the demand for growth, Balen said. And the demand for workers in the industry includes tool manufacturers, engineers and medical staff.

AAA Travel Professionals Offer Tips for Solo Travelers

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Eleven percent of all leisure travelers in the U.S. travel alone and the number is growing. So it is no surprise that travel counselors are seeing increasing business from single travelers who are looking not only for advice about great destinations but also about how to travel safely.
Travelers between the ages of 18-35 are the largest group of solo travelers, accounting for 35 percent of all single travelers, according to the Travel Industry Association. The next largest group of solo travelers are 35-49 year olds (27 percent), 50-64 year olds (26 percent) and 65+ (12 percent).
The number of single travelers is growing, according to a recent survey of AAA/CAA clubs, which found that 27 percent of travel counselors are seeing an increase in the number of trips they are booking for single travelers.

AAA asked more than 100 of their travel professionals in the U.S. and Canada about their advice for today’s single traveler and the responses provide some interesting insights for the leisure traveler who is out there alone. For both men and women, AAA/CAA travel professionals said that Europe is the first destination they would suggest to single travelers looking for advice on where to vacation. For women traveling alone Hawaii and the Caribbean were other top vacation suggestions. For men, Mexico and Hawaii came in second and third as the top destinations suggested by counselors.

AAA/CAA travel professionals also offered valuable advice for solo travelers. The top three suggestions are to take prearranged tours, travel with a group and leave a copy of your itinerary and international travel documents (passport, visas) at home with family and friends.
“There are nearly 90 million single people in the U.S. and this is clearly a market that the travel industry has been focused on in the past few years,” said AAA’s VP of Travel, Sandra Hughes, citing data from the U.S. Census Bureau. “More than half of these single Americans are women and the industry is seeing the impact of this particular group due to the increasing popularity of girlfriend getaways and other women-only vacations.”
In response to the growing trend, AAA offers the following advice for singles traveling the world alone.
Make Copies. If you are traveling internationally, be sure to make a couple of copies of your passport and leave one at home with a relative or friend and store the other one in a separate area of your luggage. If you should lose your passport this copy makes it much easier for the local US embassy to replace the document.
Keep Emergency Numbers. It is also a great idea to take along the emergency numbers of the credit card company and card number information (keep in separate secure area on your person) if you should lose your wallet.

Plan ahead. If you are traveling alone it is important to know the lay of the land before you arrive. That means doing research, reading maps and guide books and talking to certified travel professionals who have experienced the destination first hand. Know where your hotels are located, how you will get around and where you want to go. The fewer decisions you need to make when you first arrive, the less likely it is you will get lost or distracted. Try to exude a calm, no nonsense air in public places. You may not always feel calm and confident, but others will pick up on your cues and sometimes just acting confident will do the trick.

Air Force to move air base from Medan to Kuala Namu

The Indonesian Air Force intends to move its Polonia air base in Medan, North Sumatra, to Kuala Namu in Deli Serdang regency following the planned relocation of Medan's Polonia airport to Kuala Namu in September 2009.
"The Air Force has decided to move to Kuala Namu together with the Polonia airport. It is no longer feasible to remain in Polonia as it is less efficient," Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) Operations Commander Vice Marshal Gandjar Wiranegara told reporters Tuesday after officiating a transfer of duty of air base commanders at the Medan air base.

Gandjar said the air base in Kuala Namu will be built adjacent to the international airport, similar to the current setup in Polonia. He said it would be more efficient and cut costs associated with building a separate air base.

"We will share the runway in Kuala Namu. The airport will be built in the southern or western section, while the air base will be in the northern section," said Gandjar, adding that the air base in Kuala Namu will span around 1,000 hectares.

Gandjar said TNI AU would trade its assets in Polonia, to fund the construction of new facilities in Kuala Namu.
Former Polonia air base commander Col. Supriyadi said the total value of TNI AU's assets in Polonia, including land and infrastructure, is estimated at Rp 5 trillion (US$555 million).
Newly-appointed Polonia air base commander Col. Agus Dwi Putranto said he could not confirm when the airport would be moved because the relocation process was under the authority of TNI AU headquarters in Jakarta.

The central government, during a visit by State Minister for State Enterprises Sofyan Djalil and Transportation Minister Jusman Syafi'i Djamal to the planned site May 18, assured that the Kuala Namu airport would be in operation by September 2009 at the latest.
"We hope the Kuala Namu airport will be more promising than Polonia. We can no longer retain Polonia due to a number of reasons, such as the damaged runway and the deteriorating function of radars. Polonia can no longer cope with the increased number of passengers and airline traffic," Jusman said.

Sofyan said the new airport would be equipped with several support facilities, including a three-kilometer railway line and turnpike to facilitate transportation to the airport.
Head of the North Sumatra Development Planning Agency, R.E. Nainggolan, who visited Kuala Namu with the ministers, said the provincial administration had set aside Rp 40 billion for the requisition of residential land to build the turnpike.

The Kuala Namu airport, which was designed as an international airport, spans 86,000 square meters and is equipped with a 2,750-meter runway. It was also designed to serve eight million passengers per year. The Polonia airport is only capable of serving 4 million passengers annually.

EU opens in-depth probe into U.S. travel reservations takeover

BRUSSELS, Belgium: The European Commission said Thursday it would investigate online travel planner Travelport's US$1.4 billion (€1.06 billion) takeover of electronic ticketing and reservations business Worldport, saying it was worried the deal could increase travel prices.
The companies control two of only four "global distribution services" that provide information on flights and accommodation to travel agents and online booking services.

EU regulators had identified "serious concerns" because the combined company, as a provider to travel agencies, would have market shares from 40 percent to over 70 percent in Belgium, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Britain.

They said they would investigate further how the deal would affect the market and make a decision to clear or block the deal by Sept. 13.
The Commission rarely prevents takeovers but it can, and often does, ask companies to sell off units or make promises to change their business behavior.

Travelport's Galileo system is second only to Amadeus. Buying Worldspan means the new business would have only two rivals — Amadeus and the third-placed player Sabre.
"In its in-depth investigation, the Commission will assess the effects of the reduction of the number of global distribution services from four to three and the elimination of competition between Galileo and Worldspan on competition in the European economic area, and in particular whether prices for global distribution services to travel service providers would increase," regulators said.
Travelport, which owns Orbitz and CheapTickets.com, is controlled by private equity firm, The Blackstone Group LP.

A spokesman for the company was not immediately available for comment.

US Airways CEO apologizes for botching computer system change

US Airways chief executive Doug Parker apologized to shareholders and employees today for management botching the airline's switch to a new computer reservations-and-ticketing system earlier this year.
Parker, speaking in Philadelphia at the company's annual meeting, repeated other recent public statements he's made, acknowledging that the company had not made sure the new system would work properly before launching it March 4.

Those problems and winter storms resulted in US Airways and its Philadelphia International Airport hub having the nation's worst record for on-time performance and customer service in March, according to records kept by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The move to the new system "was poorly managed by us," Parker said in answer to pointed quuestions from two leaders of the Communications Workers of America, which represents ticket and gate agents. "It was not employees' fault."

John Hanson, president of the CWA local for New Jersey, New York and New England, told the CEO that even when the new system is functioning, it can take 10 to 15 minutes to rebook a passenger who has missed a connection, a job that once took one to three minutes. The "reservations migration," as airline workers call it, "set us back 10 years," Hanson said.

Parker said fixing the glitches that still infect the system is being done with input from front-line employees. "We can't talk to each other enough," he said. "I hear your frustration."
Dennis Eichfeld, executive vice president of CWA's Philadelphia local, asked if the 1,000 additional airport workers US Airways says it will hire here this summer will be enough to handle the usual summer-vacation surge in customers. Staffing for the airport's international operations hasn't been increased adequately to handle the 19 daily European flights the airline has scheduled this summer, he said.

Parker replied that the extra employees are needed throughout the airport but that he would look into the needs of the international operations. The meeting, at the Radisson Warwick Hotel in Center City, drew a sparse group of about 20, most of them company officials or employees.

Randhawa to concentrate on European Tour

Having tasted success in the Asian Tour, ace golfer Jyoti Randhawa now wants to concentrate and restrict himself to the European golf.

'I will try to restrict myself for the European Tour and try to win there. I had my fair share of success on the Asian Tour. Eventually in future I want to go and play in the US Professional Golf Association (USPGA) Tour as well,' said Randhawa here Wednesday, on the eve of the Rs 6.5 million DLF Masters.
Randhawa, a former Asian No.1, said he would also participate in the tournaments organised by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) to fulfil his commitments towards the newly formed golf body in the country.
'I have my commitments towards the PGTI and will spend some time here. I have been backing this tour and this is the nurturing stage for the golf in the country,' he said.

The 35-year-old Randhawa, who turned professional in 1994, has six Asian Tour titles to his credit till date. He won the Hero Honda Masters in 1998 and 1999 and won the Wills Indian Open tournament and the Singapore Open in 2000.
Randhawa, who was Asia's number one in 2002, ended a two-year winless run by lifting Volvo Masters of Asia in Malaysia. Last year he won the Hero Honda Indian Open crown in a play-off.

International failed to make cut

Depending on how you feel about such things as the fall's "Chase for the Card," last week's Wachovia Championship roughly marked the halfway point of the 2007 PGA Tour season. Which also means that some players who previously registered indifference are now beginning to realize that if they're planning on being part of the season- end playoff series, it's time to start picking up some FedEx Cup points.
So, with things beginning to get interesting - The Players, The Memorial and the U.S. Open are all being held in the next six weeks - here's a look back at some of the interesting things that have transpired on tour thus far.

THE STORY OF THE YEAR: Colorado lost its PGA Tour stop when The International folded after 21 years.

After declining to become part of the FedEx Cup playoff series because they didn't want to compete against the Broncos for viewers, and unable to convince the tour to either make the tournament part of the World Golf Championships or a limited-field event, tournament officials couldn't secure a title sponsor.
Part of the reasoning as to why they couldn't, they said, were tough economic times and declining television ratings - the latter brought on by the absence of Tiger Woods, who hadn't played here since 1999.
HELLO, WASHINGTON? WE HAVE TIGER WOODS ON THE LINE ... Almost a month after The International's departure from the schedule, the tour announced it would be replaced with a new event in Washington, which had lost its tournament at the end of 2006.
The sponsor? Communications giant AT&T, with a big assist from the Tiger Woods Foundation, which means Woods will almost certainly be a regular participant. Also, much to the consternation of a number of players, the tour approved the event being a limited-field tournament.

THERE GOES THAT ARGUMENT, TOO: While International officials will argue that the numbers are favorably skewed and open to interpretation, CBS, the network that televised the tournament, announced that their live coverage from the first three-plus months of the season yielded their highest ratings in five years, up 11 percent from 2006.

HOW DID THEY DO THAT? Somehow, the most exciting tournament of the year managed to do without Woods.
In March, the Honda Classic saw unheralded Mark Wilson win in a four-man playoff that stretched from Sunday evening to Monday morning. This, after Wilson made three clutch putts to stay alive, including a 45-footer for par on the 70th hole of regulation, an 8-foot par save on the 72nd hole and then a 30-footer for par on the first playoff hole.
Oh, yeah, the drama was further heightened by the fact that Boo Weekley, looking for his first tour win, missed a three-foot gimme Sunday on the 72nd hole that would have clinched a victory.
BOO WHO???!!! Prior to the Honda, Weekley's claim to fame was wearing rain gear on the course because of allergies that prevented him from wearing regular pants.
While admitting to shedding a couple of tears after his debacle at the Honda, Weekley didn't drown in his sorrows. Undaunted, he won six weeks later at the Verizon Heritage, chipping in on his final two holes. That also came during a Monday finish.

NEXT ON THE GOLF CHANNEL - WILLIE MAC BREAKS PAR! When another relative unknown, Will MacKenzie, opened the season with a bang, shooting 8-under-par and tying for fourth at the Mercedes Benz Championship, the Golf Channel, beginning its run as the primary carrier for tournament action, jumped all over it. There was coverage of his postround news conferences, and features with MacKenzie surfing; a few tournaments later, there was another piece, this time, the 32-year-old was snowboarding. While MacKenzie is certainly quite funny and entertaining, it all seemed a bit over the top, especially when you look at his results. Since the Mercedes, Willie Mac has played in 12 events and missed the cut five times. His best finish is a tie for 18th.
QUICK! SOMEBODY CALL THE GOLF CHANNEL! Meanwhile, after an abbreviated, sometimes tumultuous career at Oklahoma, Anthony Kim has shown why he should become the 2007 rookie of the year. The 21-year-old had three missed cuts and a tie for 45th in his first four events. In eight tournaments since then, Kim has four top-10 finishes.

The Reeling Dollar: American travelers agree their wallets are being
hit harder than ever as the value of the dollar continues to drop against
the euro. Countries such as France, Germany, Italy and the U.K. have become
more expensive for U.S. visitors and vice versa for travelers to the USA.
As a possible result, surveyors both American and foreign report doing more
U.S. travel within the last year.
Favorite Cities: Expenses aside, when asked what international cities
they most like to visit, Paris takes the cake with 26% of the vote,
followed by London (19%) and Rome (8%). As for Surveyors' favorite U.S.
destination, New York came in first with 25% of the vote, followed by
Washington, D.C. (20%), and San Francisco (17%).
The Economics of Travel: With the increase in transportation and
lodging prices, it's no wonder that 29% of our surveyors report an increase
in their business travel budgets as opposed to 16% who report a decline,
and 43% report a rise in their leisure travel spending, vs. 9% reporting a
decrease. In an effort to save money, 70% turn to the Internet to book
their trips, with 95% of that group purchasing airline tickets, 89%
reserving their hotel rooms and 71% making car rentals reservations online.
Paper Chase: While overall global travel has increased significantly
since 2000, travel to the U.S. from abroad declined. This is partly due to
visa problems. Travelers from China, Eastern Europe, India, parts of Latin
America and the Middle East especially report difficulty of getting a U.S.
visa. Surveyors by a 71% vote say they would be glad to undergo background
checks and pay a yearly fee to speed up trips through security if the U.S.
were to implement a type of "Easy Pass" system.
Hook Me Up: Zagat surveyors (23%) say the amenities offered have the
greatest impact on their choice of hotel, with their favorite in-room
feature -- the now nearly ubiquitous WiFi access (66% of business travelers
say it's most important, followed by the morning newspaper -- 46%, and
plasma flat screen TV's -- 20%). But electronics aren't the only amenities
in high demand. Bed-sheet menus at Mexico's Las Ventanas al Paraiso and
soap offerings, such as the 15 varieties available at the Rome Cavalieri
Hilton, typify the lengths that the world's top hotels will go to satisfy
high-end clients.
Irritants: On the other hand, when asked what irritates them most about
the places they visit, 66% of surveyors cited "poor service" as their
biggest complaint. "Dirty, small, bad" rooms were named by 12% of surveyors
while 11% were bothered by noisy fellow guests; Cost, smoking, and
uncomfortable beds registered a mere 2-3% each.
Looking Ahead: On the hotel horizon there's lots of action in China. In
anticipation of the 2008 Olympics, China is seeing an unprecedented level
of development -- and not just in Beijing. From the just-opened Shangri-La
in Guangzhou and Le Royal Meridien in Shanghai to planned outposts from
Kempinski in Wuxi and Huizhou, Mandarin Oriental on Hainan Island, Park
Hyatt in Beijing and Ritz-Carlton in Beijing and Guangzhou. Tourism to
China is expected to grow an astounding 10%, taking in more than $128
billion, in 2007. And the Chinese government hopes to keep up that torrid
pace in coming years.
